Study lettering with a pencil first

Choose a short word and draw a light baseline on paper. Sketch its letters at a comfortable size without trying to make them perfect. Use a pencil so you can compare shapes without committing to paint or a permanent mark.

Look at the spaces between letters as shapes of their own. Try a second version with slightly different spacing, then view both from farther away. Pay attention to the whole word rather than correcting one letter endlessly.

Keep both versions and write down which reads more clearly. Repeating a small study teaches you what changed. It also creates a reference collection you can return to when planning a larger piece.
